If you want to sort aardvark after absolutely everything else in English, you can use markup like:

       <indexterm>aardvark<index-sort-order>zzz</index-sort-order></indexterm>

This is an extreme example where you want to stick something at the absolute end. In other cases, we would want to place a sortable expression within the index-sort-order element, such as in the Japanese use case I described in the proposal.

    Chris,
How would this proposal allow me to place the words beginning with the
letter "a" at the end of the sort? The result would be b ... z a

Of course, this is a fictional example but it would enable users to
correct for the sort order in various languages that is different from a
    standard sort.

    repository.
This document is revision #1 of IssueNumber45a.html.

The current indexterm element cannot express the full range of indexing
semantics needed for production book indexes. This proposal addresses
    the
ability to specify a sort order.
