Actually, I remain pretty ambivalent in this argument for the moment.
The "excess taggage" approach actually helps to avoid the problems we
have experienced with some of Patti's more elaborate messages. It helps
to avoid huges string lengths that need individual parsing by allowing a
simple load into Java Vectors and the like.  The single string approach,
howver, is preferrer by my GIS programmers who, for some reason, find
string parsing preferable to significant attitional container
manipulation.
