    Posted 06-09-2011 15:57
Friends,   As I presented after the CAP workshop and again mentioned in the EM-TC meeting this week, there is a need of a symbol for CAP to be used on maps as well as for web service CAP feeds.  Just this past week Simon Elliot of EUMETSAT asked if we had made any progress on this action.  Does anyone of our TC members with to make a contribution of symbols as requested for CAP?  If so or if you have any input on this topic, please respond.   Regards,   Elysa Jones, Chair OASIS EM-TC

In most map based applications the symbol in the map will indicate the event (e.g. tsunami, bush fire, etc.) and not the type of underlying communication protocol. However, for CAP RSS feeds a unified symbol is a very good idea. The RSS icon is well-known, therefore I propse to create a CAP feed icon which is similar an which re-uses elements of the RSS icon. Please find attached two drafts just to give an impression. Whichever icon will be selected, it must be scalable to 32x32 pixel without getting illegible. These look very good. I agree with your statement about the map icons. There are numerous map symbol tables already all indicating event or incident type. I like your first symbol. It's very clean and would scale well. The second has the "!" element that is used in some map symbols already. Rob

I agree with Matthias that most of the time, the communication protocol should not have to surface in the iconography. When distinguishing between multiple types of feeds is necessary, the capsule style is nice, eg  http://www.fngtps.com/files/2/2006/05/060530_xml_icons-1.gif   It also allows room to specify RSS vs Atom vs EDXL-DE if that really became necessary. If 32x32 is required, then this makes sense.  Another similar example on the web:  http://www.theredelephant.org/html/images/rss_xml_atom_feeds_news_icon.jpg Steve On Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 3:07 PM, Rob Torchon < rtorchon@yahoo.com > wrote: These look very good. Another very simple but intuitive symbol is used by the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (gdacs.org): http://www.gdacs.org/images/cap.gif Matthias Am 10.06.2011 22:15, schrieb Steve Hakusa: > I agree with Matthias that most of the time, the communication protocol > should not have to surface in the iconography. > > When distinguishing between multiple types of feeds is necessary, the > capsule style is nice, eg > http://www.fngtps.com/files/2/2006/05/060530_xml_icons-1.gif It also > allows room to specify RSS vs Atom vs EDXL-DE if that really became > necessary. > > If 32x32 is required, then this makes sense. Matthias, Steve, Thanks for your input re Symbol for CAP. As you may know, the EM and EMA TCs have assigned the topic to the Collateral&Documents SC. Anyone interested in symbols and iconography is welcome to join us in an upcoming C&D SC call. Prior to that call however, the EMA-TC needs to clear some administrative/legal questions with OASIS. In the meantime, keep those ideas flowing. Cheers, Werner
