Axiomatics is pleased to announce that it has decided to contribute ALFA, the Axiomatics Language for Authorization, to the OASIS eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) TC for standardization. ALFA is a pseudo-language aimed at developers and which simplifies XACML policy authoring. To initiate the process, Axiomatics will start a new profile of XACML using the XACML 3.0 core standard as a base and specifying the ALFA grammar. We welcome input from all the members of the XACML TC and the OASIS community at large. Our aim is to make XACML even more successful through easier policy authoring and management. As a first step, we would like to discuss this new profile on the next TC call. I think this is great and have been urging Axiomatics to do this for some time.   On the subject of the name, the OASIS Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy ( https://www.oasis-open.org/policies-guidelines/ipr ) section 5.3 says:   5.3 Trademarks Trademarks or service marks that are not owned by OASIS shall not be used by OASIS, except as approved by the OASIS Board of Directors, to refer to work conducted at OASIS, including the use in the name of an OASIS TC, an OASIS Deliverable, or incorporated into such work. No OASIS Party may use an OASIS trademark or service mark in connection with an OASIS Deliverable or otherwise, except in compliance with such license and usage guidelines as OASIS may from time to time require.   I believe that means we can use ALFA, but not Axiomatics. (I am assuming ALFA is not a Trademark of Axiomatics.)   I think this means we have 3 choices. 1. Pick a new name. 2. Use ALFA, but make up a new phrase for it to stand for. 3. Use ALFA and state it doesn’t stand for anything.   If ALFA is an Axiomatics Trademark, I believe that unless Axiomatics decides to contribute all rights to ALFA to OASIS, we simply can’t use the name.   I am CC’ing Chet and Jamie to draw their attention to this issue, in case my interpretation is wong.   Hal   From: Sinnema, Remon [mailto:remon.sinnema@emc.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 9:20 AM To: David Brossard (david.brossard@axiomatics.com) Cc: xacml@lists.oasis-open.org Subject: RE: [xacml] New XACML profile - ALFA   Hi David,   Excellent idea!   I have some questions for you: ·         Would you mind sending out a link to more details about ALFA? ·         Do you plan to keep the name or should we change it, since it contains the name of a company? ·         Do you see this as a media type for XACML or something more?     Thanks, Ray     From: xacml@lists.oasis-open.org [ mailto:xacml@lists.oasis-open.org ] On Behalf Of David Brossard Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 2:00 PM To: xacml; xacml-users@lists.oasis-open.org Subject: [xacml] New XACML profile - ALFA   Axiomatics is pleased to announce that it has decided to contribute ALFA, the Axiomatics Language for Authorization, to the OASIS eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) TC for standardization. Hal -- a man with several lawyers in his family who clearly spent too much time listening to them -- has it about right. We'd need to look at whatever final naming configuration the TC proposes, but it sounds like you are pursuing the right approach. Sounds like a cool functionality. Best of luck. We haven't discussed this fully internally yet. As Hal points out correctly, we cannot use the name "Axiomatics" in the profile's title. If only "Anhanced" were spelled with an A :-) Axiomatics does not hold a trademark on the ALFA word. ·          Do you see this as a media type for XACML or something more? It's a new grammar to authorize XACML policies. It's aimed at developers and uses a syntax akin to C# / Java. It provides a simpler, denser syntax than XML does. XML is hard to read, ALFA isn't. Also it provides a few enhancements such as the ability to define rules independently and then reference them. Eventually ALFA policies are translated into XACML 3.0 Can you supply a URI reference for the specification, if it's in public space?  The spec is not in the public space yet. It's the goal of writing the profile to make it in the public space with Axiomatics providing the first version based on the existing grammar.   Cheers, David.     Thanks, Ray     From: xacml@lists.oasis-open.org [mailto: xacml@lists.oasis-open.org ] On Behalf Of David Brossard Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2014 2:00 PM To: xacml; xacml-users@lists.oasis-open.org Subject: [xacml] New XACML profile - ALFA   Axiomatics is pleased to announce that it has decided to contribute ALFA, the Axiomatics Language for Authorization, to the OASIS eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) TC for standardization.
