ISO/IEC 26300

  • 1.  ISO/IEC 26300

    Posted 11-13-2006 15:14
As you may know, ISO has changed the visible status of
OpenDocument v1 as approved (ISO/IEC 26300) to correctly reflect its
International Status standard, "60.00" in its harmonized stage
coding. This can be seen by searching for "26300" in the ISO search
function, after selecting "Search options > ISO number" and "Items
    to show > Both", at
    http://www.iso.org/iso/en/CatalogueListPage.CatalogueList?&scopelist=ALL.

Another way into this data is the following compound search
    results URI:
    http://www.iso.org/iso/en/catsupport/StandardsQueryFormHandler.StandardsQueryFormHandler?scope=ALL&keyword=&isoNumber=26300&sortOrder=ISO&title=true&search_type=ISO&search_term=26300

A table of the stage codes appears here:
    http://www.iso.org/iso/en/widepages/stagetable.html

When the IS is released for official publication in a few weeks,
that status code will be upgraded to "60.60" to reflect the
availability of copies for sale at the ISO web store.

Likely our next topic, regarding ISO/IEC JTC1, will be what to
advise them regarding v1.1 (which you've completed and are balloting
now, congratulations) and v1.x/2.0. We've indicated that we plan to
bring back appropriately stable revisions to JTC1. So the question
will be which next version is "appropriately stable." Based on
preliminary chats with several of you, it's my understanding is that
v1.1 is unlikely to be suggested for resubmission.

         Kind regards JBC

    James, TC members,

James: Thank you very much for this update.

TC members: I will put the question how we proceed with ODF1.1 regarding
ISO on the agenda of our call on Monday.

    Best regards

We have discussed this in the TC:

The OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee (TC) considers the
OpenDocument v1.1 specification to be a minor update to the ISO/IEC
26300/OpenDocument v1.0 OASIS standard. Compared to the OpenDocument
v1.0 specification, the OpenDocument v1.1 specification contains a
couple of accessibility-related enhancements, error corrections and
clarifications, and very few other minor enhancements. OpenDocument v1.1
currently has the status of a Committee Specification, and the
OpenDocument TC intends to submit it to the membership of OASIS for
consideration as an OASIS Standard in December 2006.

The OASIS OpenDocument TC is already working on a follow-up OpenDocument
specification to OpenDocument v1.1 (called OpenDocument v1.2 here), that
will include substantial new features, like meta data enhancements, a
formula specification and multiple other new features. It will further
    include all OpenDocument v1.1 enhancements.

It is expected that the OpenDocument v1.2 specification will be
completed mid 2007 on the Technical Committee level. For this reason,
the OASIS OpenDocument TC recommends to not re-submit the OpenDocument
v1.1 specification to ISO when it got approved as an OASIS Standard,
because this would lead to the situation where a new OpenDocument
specification is already available before the OpenDocument v1.1
specification may get approved as an ISO standard.

The OpenDocument TC will recommend submission of OpenDocument v1.2 to
ISO when it is approved as an OASIS standard. The OpenDocument TC will
submit OpenDocument v1.2 to the membership of OASIS for consideration as
    an OASIS Standard in 2007.

    Best regards

Good news, and thanks to Patrick, Michael and Jamie for all of your hard work during this process.

Is there anything additional we can do to make this specification cost free in ISO?  I've seen this done with other standards out of JTC1.  Do you know how this is triggered?

    Rob,

Hmmm, can't say I have ever heard of a "cost free" standard out of ISO.

ISO has complained to Jim Mason about his posting final versions of SC
34 standards to his website. He does so on the basis that any activity
that the US Gov. participates in means the result is a royalty free
    publication.

Since he is behind heavily guarded walls at a place that makes nuclear
weapons, ISO has not pressed the issue. ;-)

I can ask Jim about posting the final version to one of his webservers.
    Would that work for you?

Hope you are looking forward to a great weekend!

I was thinking of this ballot we had in SC34:  http://www.jtc1sc34.org/repository/0765.htm

Doesn't this call for the finalized specification to be made "freely-available"?

I was thinking of this ballot we had in SC34:  http://www.jtc1sc34.org/repository/0765.htm

Doesn't this call for the finalized specification to be made "freely-available"?

    Rob,

OK, I had forgotten about that.

Suspect we need to ask Ken Holman. He has been on a round the world trip
but should be getting close to being back home.

I will post him a note on it.

Hope you are having a great day!

Hmmmm... I may have misunderstood the initial request to have the spec
posted "cost free". I assumed he meant:

    "Freely Available Standards"
    http://isotc.iso.org/livelink/livelink/fetch/2000/2489/Ittf_Home/PubliclyAvailableStandards.htm

Freely Available ISO Standards for BPX and Developers
    Gunther Stuhec, SAP Blog

Most of the ISO standards are copyrighted and ISO charges for the most
copies. It is possible to purchase it direclty by ISO or even the
related national standardization body, like DIN (German Standardization
Institute). The charge depends mostly on the pages or even size of the
standard. It is approximately 100 Swiss Francs per copy. However, in
accordance with ISO/IEC JTC 1 and the ISO and IEC Councils are a number
of standards freely available, which can be used for standardization
purposes. You'll find these freely available standard: (A) Freely
Available Standards provided by ISO, and (B) Freely Standards Download
provided by ANSI (American National Standards Institute). The Business
Process Expert (BPX) has the opportunity to get freely available ISO
standards, in where some of the playing a key part in reference models
and open distributed processing. Some of these ISO standards are:
    (1) ISO/IEC 7498 - Open Systems Interconnection -- Basic Reference Model;
    (2) ISO/IEC 8613 - Open Document Architecture (ODA) and Interchange
    Format; (3) ISO/IEC 8824 - Abstract Syntax Notification (ASN.1);

We can post it on both Ken's site and mine and not charge. OASIS, as the
originator, can post it and not charge. But JTC1 and ISO aren't in the
business of posting things; they're just not set up for that kind of
service. All they know about (!) is printing paper.

    Jim,

thank you very much for these clarifications. I think it would be very
useful if the ISO26300:2006 would be available for download on the OASIS
web site. Though the OpenDocument TC could provide it on its web page, I
think it would be more appropriate if it would be available at the
global OASIS web pages, where the OASIS standards are listed.

Mary, do you think this is possible?

    Best regards

    Michael

    Hi Michael,

I'm going to check with a few folks at OASIS to see if there's any objection.

    Regards,
