I always read ":" as if it says "namely".
I agree that we could break it down and separate the provision from the illustration, now that there may be multiple ways to do these things.
I left that text along because if the illustrative material were removed, there would be nothing different between 3.4.1 and 3.4.2.
Can we look at this after you have an editor-revision and we can review it all in context?

The rest is just note material?
If it is illustration, I can make notes for each of the three steps.
