It seems my problem was that I didnt add the lang="fr" to the main xml file.
The documentation is split between many files, all merged together using
<xi:include ...
and I only tried to set the lang paramter to the included xml file.
now I have added it to the main xml and I get correct translations for the
xref string.
im such a noob, im really sorry for bothering you with such issue. at least
I know a little more about how translations are done and how I can
customise/override elements.

It doesn't seem to be caused by an incomplete translation, as the text in
common/fr.xml in 1.73.2 has the translated text. When I test an xref with
<book lang="fr">, I get the translated text for the xref. A more detailed
example would help.

Can you provide a minimal testcase to reproduce (including your
customization layer)? Then we could also take a look, if you do things
right :)

If it's caused by an outdated or incomplete French translation, then you
can simply "fix" the problem in your customization layer.
