Have you considered using the <abbrev> element for citations? See this
reference for an example:

Thanks Bob. That's an interesting thought, but I think my project needs a bit more--I have folks writing using multiple citations that should be grouped (like in BibTeX). This get me thinking though, thanks for the info.
