Hi Dave,
This is a case of two methods of applying formatting attributes conflict with each
other.
When you use the t:named-template="component.title", that template applies the
attribute-set named 'component.title.properties'. That's where the text-align="start"
and other properties are coming from.

component.title.properties is used quite widely isn't it?
Not sure how to address this one.
