DocBook Technical Committee Meeting Minutes: 16 August 2006
=============================================================
The DocBook Technical Committee met on Wednesday, 16 August 2006 at
05:00p EDT (02:00p PDT, 21:00GMT, 22:00BST, 23:00CEST, 06:00JST+,
02:30a India+) for 35 minutes.

2. Accepted the minutes[1] of the previous meeting.
3. Next meeting: 20 September 2006
4. Review of the agenda.
Add item 8b: entities and Unicode.
5. Review of open action items

d. Bob to ask the RFE 1503012 submittor about using colophon instead.
COMPLETED.
e. Bob to add step increment to next month's agenda.
COMPLETED.
6. DocBook 4.5 standards progress.
On July 31 the OASIS mail servers crashed, and so the
vote for DocBook 4.5 as a OASIS standard was put off
until September 1.
7. DocBook 5 issues.
Norm reported that Eliot Kimber reported an issue regarding
imagedata that Norm fixed.
Jirka has raised an RFE to ensure that attributes that
should have datatypes do have them.
ACTION: Jirka to recommend where datatypes should be added.
8. Proposal for step increment numbering.
(continued from last meeting).
The email discussion ended after the last meeting, so there
is no further input. Many felt that step increment in
line numbering was too presentational and not
semantic markup. There is no agreement to add
an attribute for step increment in line numbering.
8b. Entities and Unicode.
There have been two reports (in Serna and in onsgmls) that
the entities in isogrk4 cause error messages about not
being in the character set. The errors were reported
for 4.5, but probably also occur with 4.4 because that is when
the DocBook entities were replaced with the W3C entity set.
In that set, isogrk4 included characters longer than 16 bits,
and these seem to cause the problem. The XML standard says
a XML 1.0 parser must support Unicode 3.1. Some research by
Jirka showed that 3.1 included characters with more that 16bits.
It appears these parsers are non-conforming, so we should
ask the software vendors about this issue.
ACTION: Norm to ask David Carlyle of W3C if others have
reported such problems with the entity sets.
9. Review of Requests for Enhancement
To browse a specific RFE, enter the URL (on one line):

group_id=21935&atid=384107&aid=XXXX
1478012 Add linumsep and linenumstep to programlisting and screen
See agenda item #8.
1503012 New PRINTINFO for INFO
Bob reported that the requestor withdrew the request when
the use of colophon was suggested instead.
1535166 Check datatypes of attributes
ACTION: Jirka to research which attributes need datatypes.
1537424 Allow Jobtitle inline
The RFE argument was convincing to many. Bob pointed out that
we are adding bibliographic elements one at a time, and perhaps
we should look at the set.
ACTION: Bob to investigate what other biblio elements might
be appropriate inline.
The meeting adjourned at 5:35 EDT.
