    Great suggestion!  My initial analysis is that 
it addresses all the requirements set forward initially by Mat (although colour 
(or color if you prefer) is missing from your list of attributes that are 
reformatable.  And in fact,  we would probably have to break that out 
into colour-font and colour-fill,  with possibly further 
granularity).   It's the only proposal that is both backward AND 
forward compatible.   I think it's better than a compromise solution - 
it works,  it's clean and simple,  elegant,  and easy to 
understand.
    

     
    

    So please everyone - review the proposal and be 
ready to discuss it on Tuesday,  with assumption that we'll hold 
a final vote on the reformat issue at that meeting.  There 
will be 6 choices - 1-4 as submitted by Mat,  5 as presented 
by Doug below,  and 6 to defer any reformat solution in 1.1 as per Yves' 
recent email.  Unless some technical flaw comes to light,  I think 
option 5 is clearly the way to go for 1.1.
