OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) TC

  • 1.  A proposed resolution

    Posted 02-08-2007 19:21

I'd like to propose the following resolution for consideration on Monday's TC call.

I think it is self-explanatory, but please ask question or suggest revisions as needed.

    Thanks,

    -Rob

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Resolved:

    1) That the ODF TC welcomes any questions from ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34 and
member NB's regarding OpenDocument Format, the functionality it
describes, the planned evolution of this standard, and its relationship
to other work on the technical agenda of JTC1/SC34

    2) That the ODF TC has welcomed and continues to welcome the
participation of all companies, agencies and individuals with an
interest in editable office document formats.

    3) That the ODF TC request that the OASIS Liaison to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34
communicate this Resolution to the SC34 Secretariat and request that
this communication be entered into the document registry of SC34.

Rob, have you considered the ODF TC option of establishing a harmonization sub committee, where your work on UOF might serve as a useful guideline for JTC1/SC34 MS Ecma 376 considerations?

That is always an option for the TC, whenever we have a chunk of work that is large enough and specialized enough to warrant a subcommittee to work on it.

But I wouldn't read this resolution as being focused entirely on Ecma 376, though that is certainly a topic of interest,  For example you may recall last year, during the ISO ballot of ODF 1.0, that there were some awkward times when a NB had some questions about IRI's or BiDi support and could not figure out how to officially ask the TC questions.  So such questions were handled informally, via intermediaries, etc.  I'd like to do better in this area when we submit ODF 1.2, so that SC34 knows that we value their questions and their input.

Correct.  But I've found that  not everyone is aware of that.  The fact that we received several NB comments last year via back channels and none (that I can recall) via the comment line is some evidence of this.   Hopefully one result of this will be that SC34 is made more aware of this facility.

They could also be reminded of their ability to join OASIS as well as our policies for authorizing TC Liaisons

+1; I second Rob Weir's proposed resolution. We should probably include an email address that they can use (such as the TC public comment line or the chair's email address); including that information might make it easier for them to act on it.
