We have a CHM version saved on a server for all of our writers to reference.   I usually use the HTML version because it opens automatically from the OASIS site. I can maneuver through this version with little difficulty. Searching the HTML presents the same issue Kris mentions for the PDF. But, I guess I don’t really search the spec that often.   I’ve tried the PDF on occasion. For me, opening the PDF from the OASIS site takes close to 7 minutes. I can usually have my answer from the HTML by that time.   - Deb   From: dita@lists.oasis-open.org [mailto:dita@lists.oasis-open.org] On Behalf Of Kristen James Eberlein Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 8:29 AM To: DITA TC Subject: [dita] Which version of the DITA 1.2 spec do you use, and why?   The DITA 1.2 spec was delivered in the following formats: XHTML hosted on the OASIS Web site CHM PDF DITA source ZIP of XHTML file that can be used locally (late addition, available from TC home page, probably no one knows about it) Which format do you use? I only use the - downloaded - PDF. CHM is out of the question - I work on a Mac and don't even want to figure out how to open CHMs on my machine. Opening the PDF from the website is only required once, then save it and it opens in seconds. Using Adobe Reader does not help much in opening and navigating the PDF, though. Using Preview is so much more user-friendly. When I open the same PDF next time, Preview takes me right back where I left off last time, which is very often a good pick. Anything hosted on a website tends to be slow and prone to all kinds of internet-related problems. The Calibre conversion tool can convert
from various formats (including CHM) to many ebook formats (including epub).
You have to use a fairly recent version of Calibre, however. Many of the
version supplied as standard in Linux repositories (such as Ubuntu) are
    very back-level.

For the specific question of which version
I use, I like having the PDF version available, but for quick and easy
(interactive) reference I prefer the XHTML version, or an epub version
for local / offline emergency reference use.

    Thanks,

I use the online XHTML at OASIS - bookmark the main page, and search that page when I need to find an element. It makes search easy, as well as sending bookmarks. During pre-specification reviews, I use mostly the CHM or other local XHTML formats (specifically the download zip of XHTML with frames), because at those times I do more non-sequential jumping around in the TOC. We've made use of the DITA source files to integrate element descriptions into other tools. Same here, CHM version, but though I appreciate the Index to find elements, I use the CHM because that’s the only tool I know of that uses my OS colour theme (dark background, light font), at least for browsing the content. By the way, it would be quite nice if the HTML  outputs (as far as I know CHM are generated from HTML) could be agnostic in this area and not set colours for fonts and backgrounds to improve integration with the user colour theme. In the meantime, I’ll probably make my own.   Best regards, Colin Maudry NXP Semiconductors   From: dita@lists.oasis-open.org [mailto:dita@lists.oasis-open.org] On Behalf Of Larsen, Seraphim L Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2012 5:28 AM To: dita@lists.oasis-open.org Cc: Kristen James Eberlein Subject: RE: [dita] Which version of the DITA 1.2 spec do you use, and why?   I do exactly the same as Kristen.  I keep the CHM on my desktop.  I send links to the XHTML online at OASIS.   Seraphim   From: dita@lists.oasis-open.org [mailto:dita@lists.oasis-open.org] On Behalf Of Kristen James Eberlein Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 8:35 AM To: dita@lists.oasis-open.org Subject: Re: [dita] Which version of the DITA 1.2 spec do you use, and why?   I use the CHM file primarily. I sometimes use the online html version. More often I use the CHM version that we build ourselves into XMetaL because we have jump to help on this element built into it. On the dev side we depend (obviously) on the DITA source to build that CHM.  In particular we also depend on the topic IDs being programmatically determinable from the element names (they actually ARE the element names at present, I believe). mag --  Tom Magliery (on the iPod) On Sep 12, 2012, at 7:28 AM, Kristen James Eberlein < kris@eberleinconsulting.com > wrote: The DITA 1.2 spec was delivered in the following formats: XHTML hosted on the OASIS Web site CHM PDF DITA source ZIP of XHTML file that can be used locally (late addition, available from TC home page, probably no one knows about it) Which format do you use? Hi Kris,   I use XHTML regularly and I also use the DITA sources periodically.   Noz   From: dita@lists.oasis-open.org [mailto:dita@lists.oasis-open.org] On Behalf Of Tetsuya Sekine Sent: 13 September 2012 15:11 To: 'DITA TC' Subject: RE: [dita] Which version of the DITA 1.2 spec do you use, and why?   Hi Kris,   I use XHML version on the OASIS Web site. I was told most of the DITA professionals and DITA customers in Japan use the online version on the DITA Consortium Japan site, which we, including myself translated in Japanese and converted by PTC engine   I for myself use SuiteHelp by Suite Solutions version since I was able to see it on my iPhone.   Cheers, -Tetsuya@InfoParse, Inc.   From: dita@lists.oasis-open.org [ mailto:dita@lists.oasis-open.org ] On Behalf Of Kristen James Eberlein Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 11:29 PM To: DITA TC Subject: [dita] Which version of the DITA 1.2 spec do you use, and why?   The DITA 1.2 spec was delivered in the following formats: XHTML hosted on the OASIS Web site CHM PDF DITA source ZIP of XHTML file that can be used locally (late addition, available from TC home page, probably no one knows about it) Which format do you use? I use PDF   It is all there for browse, search, link follow, the Adobe search tool in Acrobat is pretty good. I agree search for tag defined is annoying but would not give up the containment tables for that.  We need support for instance “ph defined” and “ph used” to come out of the search.   Jim   From: dita@lists.oasis-open.org [mailto:dita@lists.oasis-open.org] On Behalf Of Kristen James Eberlein Sent: September-12-12 7:29 AM To: DITA TC Subject: [dita] Which version of the DITA 1.2 spec do you use, and why?   The DITA 1.2 spec was delivered in the following formats: XHTML hosted on the OASIS Web site CHM PDF DITA source ZIP of XHTML file that can be used locally (late addition, available from TC home page, probably no one knows about it) Which format do you use?
