It might make sense to look at the current state of specifications and the calendar world. I recall there being some interest in vpoll and we now have a new json spec for calendars (jscalendar). jmap is a protocol - it's actually developed by fastmail as a replacement for iMap and they're working through getting it re-specified as an rfc.
