  • 1.  TOSCA TC Nomination - Paul Lipton (CA Technology)

Hi all, Briefly then, it has been a privilege to serve the TOSCA TC as OASIS Convener. I believe that my past experience as a member of the OASIS Board of Directors (and on Boards such as the Eclipse Foundation and DMTF), as well as my service on the OASIS TC Process Committee, would enable me to help speed our progress, while minimizing the risk of costly mistakes in procedure that could come back to "bite us." Just as important, it is clear that we have a large and diverse group in this TC, no doubt with many smart and opinionated people. In my experience working in standards development in many organizations, a large group thrives and moves forward when an experienced Chair creates an environment that enables decisions to be made efficiently based on mutual respect, trust, and transparency. As the former Chair of the OASIS Governance Committee, with responsibilities that covered the very bylaws that govern OASIS, and for those that already know me, that is simply the only way I operate. I hope you will seriously consider my candidacy. By the way, I believe that the co-chair model is almost always the most effective, if only from the perspective of additional coverage and sharing of the workload. Presuming that there will be at least two candidates, expect me to make a motion that we elect two co-chairs, rather than use a single chair or a primary/alternate model (unless somebody else makes that motion first)! :-) In any case, I am looking forward to an worthwhile and productive Technical Committee. Hi all, having been one of the co-chairs of the consortium in the pre-standardisation phase, I would like to continue that work also under the umbrella of OASIS and formally act as a chair of the TOSCA TC. Having said that, I am also a strong supporter of the co-chair model and I would be delighted to work together with Paul or any other candidate on this subject. For those who do not know (or haven't been working with me in some form in the past), I'll attach a little backgrounder for myself: I am currently a lead architect in IBM's Cloud Initiative, focussing on cloud management systems using portable cloud services. I am responsible for enabling various IBM offerings in that space to support standardised cloud services. Prior to this, I have been an architect in IBMs WebSphere Process Server product family, focussing on Business Process Technologies like WS-BPEL and BPMN. I represented IBM at various technology standardisation committees at OASIS (WS-BPEL, SCA-BPEL), where I became familiar with the duties of committee chairs and have been acting as one of the co-chairs in the TOSCA pre-standardisation phase. In parallel, I was the project lead and chief software engineer for the Open Source WS-BPEL Designer Project at the Eclipse Foundation, and I am still a lecturer at the University of Jena, Germany. I hope you will seriously consider my candidacy, too, and I am looking forward to working with all of you on the TOSCA Technical Committee.
