    Posted 05-27-2025 14:57

    Hello DPS TC Members,

Our next meetup will take place on Tuesday, June 3 at 10:00 AM EDT. Checking in to see if you have any agenda items you'd like to propose. Please feel free to send them my way by Friday, May 30, so we can finalize the agenda.

A few friendly reminders from our May 20 meeting, along with a draft agenda for June 3:

Action items from May 20 meeting

    • All members to review GitHub Issue #7 and provide feedback and begin submitting use cases using the PR #17 template
    • Please let Bryan and Andy know if you would like to contribute to the Executive Briefing so that you can be invited to the working meetings
    • Kristina to share D&TA role-based examples with Lisa (done)
    • Dave and Stefan will continue model development; feedback encouraged
    • If you did not receive calendar invites to upcoming meetings, please contact Kelly

    Draft agenda for June 3

    1. Updates on action items and PRs
    2. Use case progress and next steps
    3. Executive briefing draft progress
    4. Metadata model progress (any feedback on PR#17; IM to be contributed)
    5. Promoting our efforts with an eye on adoption (discussion on Social Media usage)
    6. Wrap-up and next steps

I will be out of the office on June 3, but Kelly has generously agreed to step in as secretary.

Thank you for all your ongoing contributions!

    Kristina

I propose that item 4 have another subtopic besides PR#17. The current draft spec has a title ("Data Provenance Metadata") and a note that the title is not yet agreed to. Can we agree to it? If not, what are the alternative proposals?  I argue that you can't discuss item 5 on adoption if you don't even know what to call it.

Noted. Thank you, Duncan. Adding your point to the June 3 agenda, for TC discussion.

I second the quest for discussion on the name, as I consider
"Data Provenance Metadata" not a good title. I do not see any
urgence in pushing social spreading before we find a solid
name for our specification we want to spread.

I propose instead to use "Data Provenance Descriptor".

I would have no problem with "Provenance Metadata" but then
we would too easily give away our TC name as a nice link
    to our (technical) core spec.

A descripto is only one function of metadata found in the wild,
but I think, it is the most important function we want to convey:

Empower organizations to manage self-describing data instead
of having the data here and some unstructured out-of-band labels
    somewhere else.

I see Stefan's point on tying to TC name. Maybe we just call it 'Data Provenance'.

Note that whatever we call it, it will be preceded by "OASIS" and followed by two items:

    • One of "Working Draft", "Committee Specification Draft",  "Committee Specification", or "Standard" as we work our way through the process
    • Version 1.0 (at least until we change it 😊)

Should we do an informal ranked-choice poll for the name? I think the choices to date are:

    1. Data Provenance
    2. Data Provenance Metadata
    3. Data Provenance Descriptor
    4. Provenance Descriptor
    5. Provenance Metadata

Did I miss any? Any that anyone wants to add?

BTW the order above is my ranked-choice vote (but I reserve the right to augment if other suggestions made). Everyone, please state your ranked choices.

I do think we should put it to bed before too long so we have something to call it. We can always change it later if we decide we'd like something else better. Or assuming we ever make it to CSD and put it out for public review – maybe some outsider will have a better suggestion. But we can't get those suggestions until we make it to CSD – which does require a name 😊.

For Agenda item 1 (Action Items and PRs), I'm not sure if OASIS requires a minimum period between a proposal and a decision made by a quorum of TC members.  If not, I propose votes at the June 3 meeting on:

PR#21 – FAQ on data provenance standards

PR#22 – FAQ on benefits (merged, but can be rescinded)
    PR#23 – FAQ on security/compliance
    PR#24 – FAQ on 'us'
PR#25 – FAQ on 'other orgs'
    PR#26 – FAQ on CoSAI
PR#27 – FAQ on OSIM (merged, but can be rescinded)

PR#28 – FAQ on Open Trusted Data Initiative

PR#29 – FAQ on Data Provenance Initiative by MIT (merged, but can be rescinded)
PR#30 – Add FAQ numbers to README

This would authorize maintainers to merge these PRs at their convenience after the June 3 meeting rather than at the expiration of the lazy consensus periods of June 4-6, cleaning up the queue of open items.
