Dear Kristen and colleagues,
We have been working on Open Source tools for LwDITA for a few years now including our Petal Editor
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxvW-fs4BRk&list=PLQpqh98e9RgXtpnGk_oP77pbKhU2brAfX&index=8&t=6s)
and JDITA (a JSON expression of LwDITA). We previously made contact in
2020 with Mark, Carlos, and Michael in the LwDITA OASIS TC about these.
Unfortunately, we are becoming increasingly confused lately about the various versions of LwDITA that are floating around on the web. I though we would reach out to you to: (a) hopefully get some clarification from you on which version we should be using, and (b) to make you aware of the situation which is likely negatively affecting other people that aren't in the TC.
For example, when Googling "lwdita", the first link is to this
website:
https://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/LwDITA/ which at a casual glance claims to be LwDITA v1.0 from 2017. Looking insider the grammars (DTD files) linked from there for download (http://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/LwDITA/v1.0/cnprd01/LwDITA-v1.0-cnprd01-grammars.zip),
I can see that they also claim to be at version 1.0. It is this version that we had until recently been building our tools against.
However, more recently we found this website
https://dita-lang.org/lwdita/capabilities/capabilities.html. I note it is now the fourth link down the page on Google when searching for "lwdita". Confusingly, this also claims to be LwDITA v1.0, but is clearly different to the v1.0 standard from the oasis-open.org website (above). This (newer?) version claims to be based off of DITA 2.0, whereas the one at oasis-open.org claims to be based off of DITA 1.3.
Whilst the "Processing tool conformance" section of this
(dita-lang.org) website states: "Validate XDITA topic and map content, and report XDITA validation errors" - there does not appear to be any grammars (DTD?) provided/linked for download which would be necessary to achieve this.
Through further Googling we also found this GitHub repository which seems to hold grammars (DTD) for LwDITA -
https://github.com/oasis-tcs/dita-lwdita/tree/spec/org.oasis.xdita/dtd.Looking inside the DTD files, I can see that these also claim to be version 1.0... however these are different again to the DTD provided from the oasis-open.org website which also claims to be version 1.0!
To further compound the confusion, this page
(https://github.com/oasis-tcs/dita-lwdita/releases) seems to say that these grammar files are actually only version 0.3.2.
The confusion that has come about at our company all stems from the fact that in the version 1.0 at
https://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/LwDITA/, the LwDITA 'Italics'
component (https://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/LwDITA/v1.0/LwDITA-v1.0.html#:~:text=images/image_name.jpg)-,Italics,-%3Ci%3E)
was expressed only as the
tag in XDITA, and instead only in HDITA was expressed as the <emphasis> tag. That made a lot of sense to us.
However, one of our employees then recently noticed that in v1.0 at https://dita-lang.org/lwdita/components/lw-i and https://dita-lang.org/lwdita/components/lw-em now both and <emphasis> tags appear in both XDITA and HDITA. This seems a little strange to us, and we are now not even sure if we are working with the correct version of the LwDITA specification.
Can someone please tell us what the latest and correct versions of the LwDITA specification and grammar files are, and where we can safely find official updates in future?
May I also boldly suggest that if the
http://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/LwDITA/ is out-of-date then it be removed, redirected, or updated to the latest information, as it remains (a) the first result users find when searching for "lwdita" in Google, and (b) the most "official" looking of the websites; which could cause people to believe that this is the latest official version of LwDITA.
Kindest regards, Adam.
