  • 1.  Motion to approve PR#20 of draft text for metadata spec

    Posted 05-28-2025 15:28

I, Duncan Sparrell representing sFractal Consulting (ie not as editor), move that PR #20 (metadata property tables) be approved, and request that if seconded via this list, and no objections received via this list within one week (ie by 4-Jun-2025 4pm Eastern), that the motion automatically carry and the maintainers may merge the PR at their convenience.

    Some background:

I feel we need to spend more time agreeing to "content". The form issues are important, but I also want to get consensus on content so we can get a draft out for wider review - both to spur adoption and to interest others in joining in to help in the TC. I feel there is general consensus on starting with the contributions from the Data & Trust Alliance. Both to have-our-cake-and-eat-it-too on the Issue#7 debate, but also because I believe it is the correct thing to do, I propose we have a section on property tables describing the metadata, and the we include both the JADN and YAML technical encodings of the information model, as well as the JSON, XML, and YAML technical encodings of the data model as attached files.

All five technical encodings will be in separate files which I reference but do not include in the PR. Note that we haven't actually agreed to anything yet other then boilerplate (and btw there is a lot of boilerplate we still need to fill in). My hope is that we can agree to the property tables and at least have something quasi-equivalent to the D&TA spec. Ideally we'd also attach as many of the 5 technical encodings (2 info models, 3 data models) as we can agree to and get it at least into a working document, even more ideally as CSD for public review. This PR is an attempt to kick start the process.

PS I should have mentioned that TC members who are less familiar with GitHub may want to read https://github.com/sparrell/dps/blob/im/work-products/metadata-spec/prov.md which is the source of the PR. Note the first four sections are boilerplate and the substance of this PR is sections 5-7.
