  • 1.  What does it mean -- in plain language -- to call DITA a standard?

Here is a question that a Mayo co-worker just pinged me:

"Kris, I'm working on a DITA training module. I need to define what we mean by 'DITA is a standard.' What does it mean -- in plain language -- to call something like this a standard?"

I'm not sure that I gave the best answer available, although I tried :) Thoughts from others? If any folks can help with this task, it's DITA TC members.

I qualify "DITA is a standard" with "DITA is an industry standard." Like HTML5, XML, and SVG, DITA was developed formally by people from across multiple industries, reviewed formally, and approved formally. Further, it is maintained by a organizations such as W3C or OASIS designed to be accountable to its industry stakeholders. Cross-industry involvement and formal, public processes designed to support consistency and rigor are what sets apart an "industry standard" from a de facto standard such as Github-Flavored Markdown.

    2 cents.

Super answer, Stan. It might also be important to identify DITA as an "open industry standard" -- See wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_standard#:~:text=An%20open%20standard%20is%20a,license%20that%20provides%20for%20extensibility.
